5th of November I graduated for my MSc Computational Intelligence and Robotics course together with Chaekith and Jonathan. On the photo you see me in my graduaton dress with Chaekith next to me. The ceremony was a nice experience.

Although my father is not in very good health he still decided to join us for some days to England so that we could be present there altogether. We did not stay in Leicester itself but at a farmer's B&B. A good choice, nice rooms, and an excellent typical English breakfast of choice (see the photos that come soon) with sausages, eggs, fresh fruit, bacon and baked beans.

Besides the graduation ceremony we visited Stratford upon Avon, Cambridge and we had a glimpse of Ipswitch. The graduation itself was in De Montfort hall. A nice sight with all the people dressed up. And now I am graduated its time to get employed. I already had some job interviews and visit companies now and then.

Since it is hard to find a good name for a daitng site that has not been taken I registered the following domains which were still free. Unfortunately some people have no clue what AI is about (well it is Artiificial Intelligence), which I used in the names www.aidating.nl and www.aidating.co.uk, as an alternative I also registered datingatmosphere.com. If anyone knows an original name thatis not taken, please let me know.

On the photos you can see some shots of us developing our LEGO vehicles in the robotics lab at DMU. As usual we working till late, or better till early with our out of hours permit. We tested the robot in the lab and it worked very well, it's too bad that it nevertheless had trouble in the real challenge. However, apart from the results the Vienna trip was a great experience.

On Friday we took the plane to Bratislava (that was cheaper), where our terrorist, Chaekith was almost sent back at the border. At the airport they picked us up with a bus so we didn't have to walk to the border control for the impressive distance of about 80 metres. I hardly took a seat. Taxi's brought us to our apartments in Vienna.

In the evening it was time to go out. Simon brought us to a nice pub with a dance floor in the basement (the brewery / der brennerei). The music was quite good there. We had some pizza and partied till around 4 AM when the pubs were closing. At 5 in the morning we usually slept. The next morning we had breakfast early and went to the Siemens buildings where the robotics challenge took place.

Several people from our course participated in different challenges. Ben won a prize in the freestyle challenge where he presented his flying miniature helicopter. He used this helicopter in his project where he had developed a control using an evolutionary computing methodology. Constans participated in more or less every other challenge. Jonathan participated in the Sumo challenge where robots had to pull each other out of the sumo area. Sometimes however it was better not to run out of the area accidentally than to really defeat your opponent. I was thinking of using a sticker for the purpose of a robot, which can never been pushed out of the area (unless someone has a build in grabber). Ian, Chaekith and I participated in the slalom challenges.

In the parallel slalom the aim was to follow a line as fast as possible. The line consisted of different tiles that were put together resulting in arcs and corners that were a difficulty to take. We had to deal with the lighting conditions in which Ians robot failed but our robot used auto-calibration and performed quite well in that sense. Since we used LEGO mindstorms we were somewhat limited by the processing speed, number of sensors and especially the low accuracy of the sensors. Our robots had difficulty at the 90 degree corner and lost the track just before the finish. What a shame. At least we know it can do it, since it performed rather well on our test track in UK even for the enhanced parallel slalom.

In the enhanced parallel slalom a tunnel a discontinuation of the track and a brick obstacle were added as extra difficulties. At our testing track our robot dealt well with these difficulties however in the real challenge it was detecting bricks everywhere for some reason and it therefore went into brick avoidance mode too often. This issue is still unresolved.

In the evening we went to a restaurant with our group from DMU. The restaurant was about five floors under the ground in a historical building. In the night it was of course time to go out and to see more of the city. With our unlimited underground pass we used this extensively and we have seen loads of the city. In the photographs you see many nice buildings. Not everyone went in the city however, some people went to the pub directly. We were lucky that our roommates opened the door in the mornings to let us in. The next morning we missed out our breakfast, that was just too early.

That they the finals were there. The dedicated robots (electronics) were performing the best since they were manufactured especially for the purpose of the challenge. We hadn't got the money for that option however. In the afternoon we went to a small island in the city where we had dinner in a Greek restaurant with all of us. We ended that day with an after party for participants where we were for a short time. After which we travelled through the city till the U-bahn closed and we were frightened that we had to walk back al the way from the south of Vienna. But luckily there were night buses which were also free with our card. When the pub was closing that night we went on in another pub that was open until late (or early).

Last day we choose to join Jenny and her husband Wilson. Wilson had lived in Vienna for some time. We saw several places of which we had seen some already. Later that day we went to a more peaceful suburb where we had a large lunch and some nice wines. We finished the day with a walk in the hills, on the photo you see me pushing the pram with Rose inside up the hill. Although the pavement was horrible Rose seemed to be able to sleep all the way. On top of the hill we came to a place where we had a nice lookout over the city. Finally we took the bus in the wrong direction which made us return late at the hotel after which we returned home.

This was only a few days but an awesome experience. The photos can be seen individually or as a slideshow.

Voor CI (Computational Intelligence) Research Methods moeten we een Research Proposal schrijven in LaTeX. Zeg maar een voorstel tot een onderzoeksproject om daar financiering voor te kunnen krijgen.

Voor Fuzzy Logic is het de bedoeling dat we in Matlab een Fuzzy Inferencing System ontwikkelen voor een toepassing naar keuze. Een FIS maakt keuzes op basis van kenmerken die in een zekere mate van toepassing zijn op het probleem (dat in tegenstelling tot klassieke logica, waar iets ofwel van toepassing is, ofwel in het geheel niet). Bovendien moeten we een rapport schrijven om de keuzes in het systeem te onderbouwen en de resultaten van alternatieven te presenteren.

Voor AI Programming is het de bedoeling dat we software ontwikkelen in Prolog om opdrachten in natuurlijke taal om te zetten naar MS DOS commando's. Bv. "Verwijder al mijn bestanden op de diskette" en het systeem zou dat om moeten zetten naar "del a:\*.*" of zoiets. Ook hier is het de bedoeling dat we e.e.a. in een rapport presenteren.

En tenslotte, waarschijnlijk het meeste werk, de opdracht voor Mobile Robots. De opdracht is een behaviour based (gedragsmatig) subsumptie-architectuur te implementeren op de AIBO en vooraf een literature review (literatuuronderzoek) te doen naar de mogelijkheden en onmogelijkheden. Overigens je kan dit ook met de LEGO robot doen. De LEGO robot heeft meer restricties, maar is wel eenvoudiger. Met de LEGO robot hebben we al wat ervaring, maar de AIBO wil ik ook zeker leren kennen. Een subsumptie architectuur is opgebouwd uit lagen, waarbij elke laag verantwoordelijk is voor een bepaald soort gedrag. De onderste laag is verantwoordelijk voor het meest basale gedrag (bv. het vermijden van obstakels, of het (voorwaarts) bewegen). Hogere lagen zijn verantwoordelijk voor zaken als planning. De robot dienst op een ondergrond voorzien van gekleurde lijnen voedsel te kunnen vinden (patroon van lijnen), een S-vorm te volgen in één richting en een baken in een bep. kleur te vinden en daar te stoppen. De literature review, de implementatie dienen weer opgeleverd te worden middels een rapport. Daarnaast is er uiteraard een presentatie van de implementatie.

Eén en ander dient dus geïmplementeerd en gerapporteerd te worden voor de kerstvakantie (14 dec). Ik hoef me dus niet te vervelen .

Voor het vak AI Research Methods (onderzoeksmethoden) moet ik een paper kritisch beoordelen en presenteren. Komende dinsdag presenteer ik een onderzoek van degenen die de software hebben ontwikkeld voor de AIBO robot. De doelstelling van hun implementatie is dat de robothond een levendige (lifelike) indruk/impressie kan/zal vertonen. De auteur tracht dit te bewerkstelligen door de complexiteit te verhogen.

Zijn onderzoek beslaat het hele spectrum, hij gaat in op de architectuur, de wijze van lopen, het verwerken van visuele input en het verwerken van geluiden. Dit moet bovendien op een gedragsmatige manier gebeuren en daarom wordt een intern model voor emoties gebruikt. Ik vind het in ieder geval bewonderingswaardig, de ontwikkeling van de AIBO is naar mijn mening een grote stap voorwaarts voor de ontwikkeling van entertainment robots.

Ben je nog onbekend met de AIBO, dan raad ik je aan de uitzending Roboliefde, over robots in de zorg eens te bekijken. Het is werkelijk vertederend.

Omdat ik bij nader inzien de huur voor Bede Hall wel wat aan de hoge kant vond heb ik gekozen voor private accomodatie in het centrum van Leicester (5 minuten lopen vanaf de universiteit). Een redelijk oud gebouw. Wel moest ik zelf nog gordijnen kopen voor de behoorlijk hoge ramen. Verder ging enkele weken het brandalarm af toen we de oven gebruikten, niet echt een gezellig geluid kan ik je vertellen. 2 uur later deed ik de kraan dicht en kwam het water uit het keukenkastje. Dat was dus ook niet echt gezellig, het water tegenhouden was ook niet echt een optie. Bovendien wist ik niet waar de hoofdkraan was en was mijn huisbaas niet bereikbaar omdat hij in Frankrijk was. Gelukkig had ik het nummer nog van een klusser die het fornuis installeerde de dag dat ik er introk en hij kon me vertellen waar de hoofdkraan was. Intussen stond de keuken natuurlijk wel blank, was het brandalarm wegens kortsluiting al een tijd aan het loeien en droop het water door de vloer naar de begane grond en kelder. Maar goed, inmiddels is alles weer droog. Wel moet het brandalarm nog vervangen worden, want dit is nu een rookdetector en niet een hittesensor, zoals gangbaar in een keuken. Een rookdetector gaat bij het minste of geringste af. Een hitte sensor overigens ook, getuige mijn benedenburen die al twee keer om 5 uur 's nachts het brandalarm lieten afgaan.
Verder bevalt de accomodatie natuurlijk goed. Twee week terug bovendien party in de kelder, vanaf 2AM, met live DJ (studenten muziektechnologie van de begane grond).

Mijn cursus CIR is bovendien begonnen. Enigszins verbaasd was ik wel de 1e dag (enrollment), er kwamen maar twee mensen (incl. mijzelf). Er waren dus in totaal 4 studenten die de cursus volgen. Misschien gezelliger als de klas wat groter was, maar je hebt nu wel behoorlijk individueel onderwijs. Een stuk persoonlijker dan de klassen in NL.

Verder heb ik deelgenomen aan een aantal introductieactiviteiten, waaronder een trip naar Stratfort upon Avon, de geboorteplaats van Shakespeare. Mooie oude huizen daar. Enkele musea bezocht, waaronder het ruimtevaartmuseum en de Picasso-tentoonstelling. Ook heb ik samen met Nikhil een fietstocht gemaakt door het Bradgate Country Park. Met Matthew naar enkele pubs geweest in het centrum, waaronder Polar bear, weliswaar goedkoper dan de 3.90 pound, maar bier is toch behoorlijk duur hier.

Afgelopen week kwam ook Chaekith (uit India) aan om deel te nemen aan de cursus en was iedereen compleet. We hebben de LEGO robot geprogrammeerd, wat geleerd over robotica, AI programming (prolog), onderzoek en fuzzy logic.

Een beetje behelpen eerst, ik had geen pannen, geen schaar, etc. Dus dan maar een diepvriespizza, of baked beans klaarmaken in een mok in de magnetron, evenals noodles. Of de mok wel zo magnetrongeschikt is betwijfel ik, maar je moet wat. Nu heb ik pannen gekocht bij de Aldi (wel een half uur lopen). De tweede keer ben ik maar terug gegaan met een dubbeldekker bus, maar ja die brengt je ook maar tot op de helft. Gister een rijstgerecht, vandaag denk ik een maaltijdsoep. Helaas heb ik nog geen blikopener. Bovendien heb ik geen internet, en dat mis ik wel. Niet even een online game, chatten of uiteraard, web development (of bloggen). Een filmpje kijken kan dan natuurlijk nog wel en dat doe ik dan ook regelmatig. Maar geen Sylvia die met mij mee kijkt.

Maandag had ik een introductie van de universiteit, over veiligheid, services, afdelingen, etc. Dinsdag een toets om te bepalen op welk niveau je Engels beheerst. Sinds woensdag zijn er Engelse lessen. Voor 10 september moeten we o.a. een presentatie doen en een essay schrijven. Het robotlab heb ik ook al even bekeken, ziet er netjes uit, AIBO's, pioneers, etc, grote pc schermen. In de bibliotheek kan ik zo af en toe internetten, de bibliotheek is vanaf oktober 24 uur per dag geopend (nu nog tot 21:30). Kijk dat zijn nog eens openingstijden .

Als ik permanent internet heb (op mijn kamer), wanneer ik verhuis naar Bede Hall, zal ik eens vaker bloggen.

De opleiding CIR, lijkt op zich wel wat op Kunstmatige Intelligentie (AI), maar verschilt er vooral in dat het in veel hogere mate gericht is op technische toepasbaarheid en technische ontwikkelingen. De opleiding KI daarentegen is enorm breed en richt zich ook op psychologie-gerelateerde zaken. De opleding CIR bestaat uit de volgende onderdelen (van de website, lees meer):

During the final semester students will complete a project equivalent to four modules.

Programme

Duration: 1 year full-time

Computational Intelligence (CI) encompasses those techniques and methods that can be used to tackle problems that are not solved well by more traditional mathematical and statistical techniques. There are a large number of topics that could be considered but the four areas of fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary computing and knowledge based systems provide the student with an array of tools and paradigms that encompass much of what is considered to be CI. Mobile robotics and CI techniques go hand in hand and the ability to get mobile robots to react intelligently to their environment is a highly developed research field that is being tackled within the Centre of CI. The aim of the course is to give students knowledge of the various paradigms in CI, skills in the computational techniques used, an insight into their theoretical basis and the ability to apply these techniques to a wide variety of problems including mobile robots.

The modular nature of the course means that a number of qualifications are available depending on the number of modules taken and passed. Successful completion of four modules leads to the award of a PG Certificate and a PG Diploma can be obtained from completion of a further four modules or the project. Alternatively, completion of all eight modules and the project earns the full MSc.

Current modules are as follows:

• Induction Unit: This two week course introduces students to a range of skills and facilities that underpin their future studies
• This essential foundation ensures that students from a range of academic and industrial backgrounds can maximise their chances of success on the course
• Applied Computational Intelligence: Considers historical, philosophical, and future implications of AI
• Artificial Intelligence Programming: Presents a logical programming approach for problem solving in industry
• Artificial Neural Networks: Appraises neural networks computing and use of networks for cognitive modelling
• Computational Intelligence Research Methods: Details quantitative and qualitative approaches including laboratory evaluation, surveys, case studies and action research
• Evolutionary Computing: Specifies theoretical issues of evolutionary computing (genetic algorithms, evolutionary systems, data representation and genetic operators)
• Fuzzy Logic: Considers fuzzy paradigms which have become established as computational tools
• Intelligent Mobile Robots: Covers the sensing, representing and modeling of the environment, and the adaptive and social behaviour of robots
• Mobile Robots: Discusses hardware and software architectures used to build mobile robot systems  

The course lasts for a full year. The eight modules are taught over two
semesters (four in each) and the project occupies the three month period over summer. Assessment is by coursework, examination and project.

Careers

Following this programme would allow graduates with skills in computational intelligence to typically follow careers in the following areas - research, programming (AI, C++ etc.), software engineering, games development, control systems, robotics. A number of past graduates are now studying for PhDs.

Candidate Requirements

• Applicants should normally have at least a second class Honours degree from a British University or a recognised equivalent in any of the following subject areas: Computing, Engineering, Maths, Science, Psychology/Cognitive Science
• Most modules require some mathematics ability and computer programming
• Competency in English is essential
• Applications are also welcomed from candidates with industrial experience sufficient to earn accreditation prior learning
